Getting an Accurate Car Repair Estimate

When your car stops running well, the first thing you reach for is your phone and start hunting for a repair estimate.  You hope that when you describe your car’s symptoms, the automotive professional on the line can tell you what is wrong and give you an accurate estimate on what it will take to fix it.  Maybe the solution they offer sounds far-fetched or expensive, so you call around to other shops.  Perhaps the next shop thinks the repair is something completely different.  By now, you’ve called three or four different shops, plus the dealership.  You have heard a variety of possibilities with various estimates to match.  You start thinking of selling your car because pricey repairs aren’t in your budget.

You call one last shop, but instead of giving you a list of potential costly repairs, they encourage you to bring the car in for an inspection to diagnose the cause of the problem.  You hesitate.  It sounds fishy to you.  You think, “They’re just trying to get me in their claws, right?”  Not so fast…

Accurate estimates depend on a thorough inspection.  Often, the root cause of your car’s problem is masked with seemingly unrelated symptoms.  For example:  Suddenly your car is no longer shifting from third to fourth gear. You watch as the RPM climb ever higher, but your car is not going any faster.  You would assume that your transmission is the problem, right?  You call around to get quotes for transmission repair and are shocked by the cost. You consider selling or trading in your car. If however, you had a trained technician inspect the car and perform a series of diagnostic tests, it turns out that your Alternator is old and is no longer supplying the proper system voltage your transmission requires to smoothly change gears.  For the price of a diagnostic fee and a new alternator, you have a transmission that now shifts without any problems.

The real world of “Check Engine Light” diagnosis is definitely not as simple as it is often advertised on commercials.  No matter how catastrophic a problem with your vehicle may seem, we encourage you to have your vehicle thoroughly inspected prior to an estimate.  Modern cars are super complicated.  Issues such as a Check Engine Light and its related code do not exactly point towards what is wrong with your car.  Most often the generated code is the computer’s response to encountering a situation that is not normal.  It is the job of a properly trained, ASE certified, and highly skilled technician to thoroughly investigate the issue. Based on the code presented a series of tests must be performed to diagnose the root cause of the problem.  With a skilled automotive professional Technician looking at your vehicle, you can have the peace of mind that the problems will be addressed the first time.
